We believe that continued seasonal OSV closures will lead to further decreased sticker revenue for the Town of Duxbury, ultimately resulting in the Town’s decision to not renew their annual lease of the beach.
- The Town of Duxbury currently leases Duxbury Beach from the Duxbury Beach Reservation for a total of $950,000.
- The Town uses revenue from beach stickers to provide facilities (like porta potties and trash removal) and maintain beach staff. Currently, 75% of total Beach Permit Revenue comes from OSV Permits.
- If the DBR moves forward with their plan to remove OSV access, the town will lack the funds needed to cover the lease with sticker revenue. This could lead to the town deciding not to renew the lease. If the DBR loses the lease with the town, the DBR would need a large increase in donations in order to cover costs to maintain the integrity of the barrier beach. If not properly maintained, the beach will inevitably breach, irrevocably damaging homes and businesses.
- Due to increased costs and decreased funding, we believe the DBR will not have the funds to cover beach restoration for more than two major storms.
- Growth in overhead from YOY increases in executive compensation is drastically outpacing declining donations, the DBRs secondary source of revenue.
- The Duxbury Beach Reservation is a public nonprofit that is supposed to abide by all 501c3 IRS guidelines, including broadly accepted GAAP accounting principles as well as FASB financial reporting principles. The lack of transparency surrounding the financials of the DBR reservation is indicative of underlying management problems.
